NEW BLOG POST - My thoughts on the Woolwich attack!

“It would be been pretty much impossible for me to ignore what happened in Woolwich, South London today as it’s been all over my Facebook and Twitter feed and has everybody up in arms. I wasn’t even going to write this blog post but I figured with everyone talking about it I might as well put my two cents in.

Although we don’t yet know the whole story, I don’t see why I should pussyfoot around the issue. It’s clear to me that the thing that has everyone divided isn’t so much the violent nature of this attack, but the claims that it’s, as the article says; a ’terrorist incident’. I think if eye witness reports are anything to go by, it was.

I wouldn’t be so bold nor stupid as to say that all Muslims are bad, but faith clearly played a massive part in this brutal attack, and it’s something we need to acknowledge! The ignorance of some people astounds me. They’re so scared of coming across racist that they say this could’ve just as well have been a white British man who did this, and that we’re all discriminating by telling it like it is…”

NEW BLOG POST - ‘Making a cartoon avatar that looks like you!’

NEW BLOG POST - ‘Making a cartoon avatar that looks like you!”

“Hey guys! So I thought I could do with a new avatar, and fancied something a bit different. I think it’s pretty cool when people have cartoon pictures as their avatars, ones they’ve designed to look like themselves, so I thought I’d have a play around on a few different sites that let you do this, and see what I could come up with!

I also thought it make a helpful little list for those of you interested in creating your own 2D likeness. I’ll list the different sites I used and give a little review on each of them, then you can have a go yourselves…”

NEW BLOG POST - ‘The Tumblr Takeover’

NEW BLOG POST - ‘The Tumblr Takeover’

imageimage

So the news that has been making its rounds in cyberspace this week, is that of Yahoo’s plans to purchase Tumblr. If you aren’t up to date with what’s been going on, I suggest you read the following article first:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2013/may/19/yahoo-poised-buy-tumblr

Tumblr really hasn’t been around all that long, but it’s become very popular over the last couple of years, and has kind of a cool, indie-kid following; who see it as an alternative to sites like Twitter and Facebook, and a place to express themselves via monochrome pics with movie quotes on and photos with a ‘vintage’ border of them in a field (alright, I know that’s not all people use Tumblr for, but I’d say it makes up for a large proportion of it’s fanbase)

Yahoo are NOT the cool kids. They wouldn’t even care about Tumblr if it wasn’t so
popular, all they seem to want to do is cash in on it and try and get one up on Google!Which leads me to my biggest qualm of all… why can’t big shot companies like Yahoo and Google just let independent sites be? Why do they insist on trying to take over the internet!? .”

NEW BLOG POST - ‘Who said living here was easy?’

NEW BLOG POST - ‘Who said living here was easy?’

Todays post is gonna be kind of a long rant (you have been warned!)

I know I wrote a post a little while back about my move to London from the countryside (click here to read it) but today I actually wanted to talk a bit about the building we live in, and our neighbours.

So myself and Steve live together in a studio apartment. There’s 10 different flats in this building (it’s three storeys high) but ours is right on the bottom floor (although we’re currently staying upstairs in Flat 6 for a few weeks while they carry out some work on the downstairs flats)

Muswell Hill is a really nice area. There are much worse areas of London we could be living in! I feel pretty safe here and the as a whole the people are pretty friendly, but quite frankly, this building and it’s inhabitants are a fucking embarrassment!

First of all, when telling people where exactly in Muswell Hill we live, describing it as “The building with all the rubbish bags and trash piled up outside” seems to do the trick…”

Amanda Bynes - The Britney Spears Effect

NEW BLOG POST -  ‘Amanda Bynes [The Britney Spears Effect]’

For some reason, we all love to see a trainwreck. There’s a kind of sick voyeuristic thrill in watching a celebrity fall apart before our eyes, and the media are all too quick to cash in on the latest scandal. I call it the ‘Britney Spears effect’, as a reference to the vast amount of press coverage she received during the time of her very public breakdown back in 2007.

But it seems the press have found a new starlet to hound, and have set their sights on former Nickelodeon actress Amanda Bynes.

Since being arrested and charged with a DUI last April, she’s rarely been out of the news, and reports and allegations of drug use and increasingly erratic behaviour have been rife…

NEW BLOG POST - ‘Side effects: Antidepressants and me!’

NEW BLOG POST -  ‘Side effects: Antidepressants and me!’

image

So I finally got round to watching the film ‘Side Effects’ with my flatmate Steve last night, and it’s going to be the inspiration behind todays blog post. Mental health can be kind of a touchy subject and one that isn’t particularly spoken about much in the mainstream media, so to see it as the subject matter of a Hollywood movie is pretty refreshing

As far as my own experiences with medication go, I was prescribed the antidepressant Sertraline (also known as Zoloft or Lustral) last year, and took it for about 5 or 6 months.

I was initially prescribed the drug more for my anxiety than anything else. I was waking up each morning with a terrible sense of fear and dread looming over me, and it was interfering with my day to day life. I felt I couldn’t carry on the way I had been, and went to my doctor for some help. I’d never taken antidepressants before this, but would say I’d definitely been depressed in the past (I’ve struggled with self harm, and attempted suicide on a few occasions)…”
